Wake the Dead

When I saw Stacy from Tattered Nest Designs create Wednesday Addams after Tim’s Chapter 3 release I immediately thought of this scene, where they were waking up the dead and decided to create some home decor featuring this scene.

First, I started by assembling the box, I cut all the pieces out of 3 mm cardboard and attached them together using hot glue. Then I worked on the “ground”. I stuck down some tissue paper to the bottom of the box and added grit texture paste. After painting it with brown acrylic paint it looks like muddy ground. Then I created night sky using metallic blue acrylic paint and I added some stars – I die cut Swirling Stars out of vellum and applied texture paste mixed with gold acrylic paint over it, which created nice dimensional stars. I also cut a circle out of white cardstock and coloured it orange to represent the moon. The outside of the box is quite plain – I just applied some grit texture paste and black metallic acrylic paint. Finally, I just added some bats (Bat Crazy) cut out of black cardstock.

Then I worked on various elements of the scene. I created graves by cutting them several times using ScanNCut and painting them with black or grey acrylic paint. I created different sizes so that it looked like some are more in the distance. I also added a little bit of shading using Speckled Egg Distress Oxide Ink. I created the skeleton by die cutting it three times, applying some Antique Linen and Hickory Smoke Ink and adding fake blood (red acrylic paint mixed with PVA glue). I also added fake blood to some of the graves. Then added a church and some trees (Ghost Town die set). I coloured the church black using Black Soot and distressed the edge using a marker so that it looks more dimensional.

Then I created the main element – Wednesday Addams (Trick or Treater die set). I cut out all the pieces as usual, but I added two triangles to represent shirt collar, I added some hair bands and I used the stick from the broom included in this die set to create a shovel handle and I cut the shovel shape out of black cardstock by hand and applied silver embossing powder.

After I decided where I want all the elements to be, I stuck them down using glue. It was a bit more difficult with the skeleton, I cut slits into the ground and tuck its legs there. I also placed one of the graces right behind it for extra support. What was most challenging, however, was Wednesday. I attached the shovel, which she is holding in her hand, to the foremost grave and I attached her other hand to another grave.

Then I added a fence, which I cut using ScanNCut, and a gate, which is a Gate Keeper die set. I painted the fence brown with acrylic paint and I made the gate black and silver.

Finally, I just added some smaller elements like candles, raven, spiderwebs, ghosts, pumpkin and bones (Frightful Things, Regions Beyond, Spider Web, Trick or Treater die sets) and my shadow box was ready.

Have a great Wednesday!
Dana

  1. This project is hauntingly fabulous. I am considering buying a Brother Scan & Cut. Which model should I get & how difficult is it to use? I am technologically challenged. Would you please add me to your email list? marsim5@verizon.net
